OpenAI Launches GPT-5 Turbo — Why It Matters for Everyone Using AI

OpenAI announced the launch of GPT-5 Turbo today, its latest and fastest large language model. The new model delivers what the company calls "a significant leap in both speed and reasoning quality" compared to the previous GPT-5 release from earlier this year.
In internal benchmarks shared by OpenAI, GPT-5 Turbo scores 15% higher on complex reasoning tasks while responding approximately twice as fast as standard GPT-5. The model also demonstrates improved performance on math, coding, and multi-step planning tasks — areas where previous versions sometimes struggled.
Perhaps most notably, OpenAI is extending access to GPT-5 level intelligence to free-tier users for the first time. Free users will be able to send a limited number of messages per day using a smaller, optimized version of the model. Paid ChatGPT Plus subscribers ($20/month) get unlimited access to the full GPT-5 Turbo model.
For developers, the GPT-5 Turbo API is available immediately through the existing OpenAI platform with no changes to pricing. The model supports the same 128K token context window as its predecessor and is compatible with all existing GPT-5 function calling and tool use features.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, wrote on X: "GPT-5 Turbo is what we wished GPT-5 was at launch. Faster, smarter, more reliable. This is now our default model for everything."
